Attendance Policy
Children need to be in school on time everyday to be successful students. Tardies--If your child arrives after the bell rings, s/he is tardy. If s/he arrives more than 30 minutes late without a doctor’s note, s/he is unexcused part day. Students who are tardy 30 minutes or more on three occasions, are truant. Absences--Please call the office (562) 868-3788 to report every absence. Illness is an excused absence, staying home for other reasons, is usually not. Students who have a fever, vomiting, or contagious condition should stay home. Students who are sick for 3 days or more need a doctor’s note when they return. We would also appreciate a note from the doctor if your child has a chronic illness. Absences not verified within 10 days by a parent (through a phone call or note) are truancies. We will need a note from your doctor/dentist in order to excuse your child for a doctor’s visit. Please send the note to the office. Illness/health concerns--If your child is going to miss 5 or more days of school due to illness, surgery, or other health concern, you may request an independent study packet. Packets may be requested from Angie in the office from 7:30--11:00 a.m.. All independent study work must be completed and returned to the school office the day the child returns to class for the student to receive credit. If your child is scheduled for surgery, please request the packet 5 days in advance. Students who must miss school for a month or more due to illness or injury may request a home teacher. Call the office for more information. Family emergencies/vacations--We are sorry but we can no longer excuse students who are absent for family emergencies, personal reasons, or vacations. It is considered a parent violation when your child misses school due to family emergencies, personal reasons, or vacations. Frequent Absences--Students with frequent absences or tardies, and students who are truant, will be referred to the School Attendance Review Team (SART) for assistance in limiting future absences or tardies. Those who continue to have attendance problems will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) for further action. Please pick your child up promptly--Students must be picked up on time after school. In some cases, when a child is left late after school, we need to call the Sheriff’s office.
